George Washington Statue - Virginia Capitol Rotunda

Address: 1000 Bank Street, Richmond, Virginia

This marble statue of George Washington is by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon and is located in the center of the Virginia State Capitol Rotunda in Richmond. The sculptor visited Washington at Mount Vernon in 1785 and took detailed body measurements and a life mask resulting in an exact life-sized statue matching Washington's proportions. It was installed at the Capitol in 1796. Surrounding the Washington statue on the walls of the rotunda are busts of the seven other presidents who were born in Virginia. Photos of these busts can be seen at the Virginia Born Presidents page.
