James Monroe Statue - Missouri History Museum

Address: 5700 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Missouri

This statue of James Monroe is part of the Signing of the Treaty Monument located inside the Jefferson Memorial Building which houses the Missouri History Museum. Along with Monroe (standing at left in the photos below), it features Robert Livingston, U.S. Ambassador to France (seated) and France's Treasury Minister, Francois Barbe-Marbois (leaning over the table) signing the Louisiana Purchase Treaty in 1803. Monroe was, at that time, President Thomas Jefferson's special envoy to assist Livingston in negotiating purchase of land from France. This monument was sculpted by Karl Bitter and is a smaller scale version of a nearly identical monument at the Missouri State Capitol.
