This statue of James Monroe is part of the Signing of the Treaty Monument located on the north side of the Missouri State Capitol near the south bank of the Missouri River in Jefferson City. Along with Monroe (standing at left in the photos below), it features Robert Livingston, U.S. Ambassador to France (seated) and France's Treasury Minister, Francois Barbe-Marbois (leaning over the table) signing the Louisiana Purchase Treaty in 1803. Monroe was, at that time, President Thomas Jefferson's special envoy to assist Livingston in negotiating purchase of land from France. This monument was sculpted by Karl Bitter and cast by Roman Bronze Works.
