James Madison was born on March 16, 1751 in King George County, Virginia, in an area now known as Port Conway in the home of his maternal grandparents, on their Belle Grove plantation when his parents had come for a brief visit. The house in which he was born was destroyed after it fell into the Rappahannock River in the 1930s. The site is marked by a sign from the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission.
