Abraham Lincoln Monument - Council Bluffs, Iowa

This monument commemorates Abraham Lincoln's 1859 visit to this location which eventually resulted in him selecting Council Bluffs, Iowa as the Eastern terminus of the Union Pacific (transcontinental) railroad. This monument was erected in 1911.

  • Even though the eastern terminus of the transcontinental railroad was chosen to be Council Bluffs, construction on the railroad started in Omaha, Nebraska due to the existence of the Missouri River between the two cities.
