Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743 in Albemarle County, Virginia in a home that was built by his father on the family's plantation that was known as Shadwell. The house in which he was born was destroyed by fire in 1770. The site is marked by a sign from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
