St. James Episcopal Chapel was built in 1879 and became known as the Church of the Presidents as seven U.S. Presidents attended services here: Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, and Woodrow Wilson. It became the Long Branch Historical Museum in 1953. On the grounds of the former church is a structure known as the Garfield Tea House. This house was named after James Garfield and was built from the railroad ties used to construct a temporary railroad line to transport the wounded President from the nearest station to a house in Long Branch where he would die a short time later.
